Safeguarding adults in sport

The Newcastle Safeguarding Adults Board were represented at the North East Sports Welfare event at St James’ Park on 21st June 2025.

The event was organised by RISE North East and was attended by over 100 people. It brought together grassroots sports clubs from across the region. The aim was to share learning and best practice that would improve the safety and welfare of club participants and members, emphasising that safeguarding and welfare were everyone’s responsibilities. Claire Nixon, Newcastle Safeguarding Adults Board Coordinator, Newcastle City Council and Tonya Cook, Detective Inspector, Northumbria Police hosted a workshop on safeguarding adults in sport. It was a great opportunity to help improve community understanding of safeguarding adults, how to report concerns and where to seek advice and support.

The NSAB is keen to hear from any community groups who would like to know more about safeguarding adults, please send us an email to see if we can help: safeguardingboards@newcastle.gov.uk
