This week we are supporting Safeguarding Adults Week. This is a national week of activity to raise awareness of safeguarding adults. Safeguarding adults is protecting adults with care and support needs from abuse and neglect.
Abuse can happen to anyone and it can take many different forms. Financial abuse, sexual abuse, emotional and verbal abuse, physical abuse (also referred to as domestic violence), and neglect are all ways in which a person can suffer in an abusive relationship. The abuse may take place within the family, or it may be a carer, friend, or anyone else who comes into contact with you and your family.
If you are worried about someone, or if you are experiencing this yourself, there are people who can help you.
If you are told about or witness an incident of adult abuse, are the victim of adult abuse or think abuse may be happening you can:
- contact someone you trust, such as a GP, nurse, police officer or care worker. They will pass on your concerns to the safeguarding agencies.
- professionals must complete the online safeguarding form
Adult Social CarePoint at Newcastle City Council are the main point of contact in Newcastle if you are worried about the safety of an adult.

This week we are supporting Safeguarding Adults Week. This is a national week of activity to raise awareness of safeguarding adults. Safeguarding adults is protecting adults with care and support needs from abuse and neglect.
Abuse can happen to anyone and it can take many different forms. Self-neglect is a common concern which can have a serious impact on people. The following video was made to explain more about self-neglect and how this might affect those around you.
You may not be sure why you are concerned and don’t know quite how to put your worries into words. You might be someone living close to, or regularly come into contact with neighbours, members of your community or friendship groups and start to notice a change in someone you know. They may have started to show signs that they are not looking after themselves as well as they used to. It may just be a feeling that you have that something isn’t quite right.
If, after watching the animation, it’s all now starting to make more sense, please do take action and contact one of the services on the film (or listed below) to get that critical help for someone in need. It really could make a big difference and lead to a positive change for somebody who is struggling.
You may also have realised that you are feeling troubled and anxious about yourself. Please do get in touch with the people who can make sure you get the right kind of support. Everyone needs a helping hand at some point in their lives.
You can contact Adult Social CarePoint at Newcastle City Council if you or someone knows needs help and support.
In the most serious self-neglect cases, a multi-agency safeguarding adults response will be required. To report a safeguarding adult concern:
- contact someone you trust, such as a GP, nurse, police officer or care worker. They will pass on your concerns to the safeguarding agencies.
- professionals must complete the online safeguarding form

Abuse can happen to anyone and it can take many different forms. Home takeover or home invasion (sometimes known as ‘cuckooing’) is a type of criminal exploitation where someone moves into your home and takes over. Abusers may use force to move into your home or make you invite them to stay. Once living in your home they may use your house to carry out crimes.
The following video was made to increase awareness of what home takeover is and how concerns can be reported.
